How to Easily Defeat Erlang in Black Myth: Wukong | Complete Build and Strategy Guide

Erlang easy gameplay video

Erlang, the Scared Divinity is one of the most challenging bosses in Black Myth: Wukong, with a unique shield mechanic and three battle phases. Many players struggle with him, but using my build, you’ll have a much easier time defeating Erlang.

Erlang’s Battle Mechanism

Erlang has a shield. Once the shield is broken, you can deal more damage to him, but you only have 30 seconds to do so before the shield regenerates. Additionally, when his health drops to 75% and 50%, marking the transition to a new phase, the shield will also regenerate.

Strategy to Defeat Erlang

Targeting the Shield Mechanism:
The Plaintain Fan and Stone Transformation are highly effective at breaking Erlang’s shield. The Plaintain Fan guarantees a 100% shield break. When transformed into Stone, Erlang will not attack, allowing you to safely weaken his shield. With good execution, you can completely break his shield.

Limited Time to Output Damage:
After breaking the shield, you only have a short window to deal damage, requiring high output. If you don’t deal enough damage, the shield will regenerate before reaching the next phase, making the fight much harder.

Build Priorities

  • First Priority: Reduce the cooldown (CD) of Plaintain Fan, so you can use it 2-3 times during the fight.
  • Second Priority: Maximize output by increasing attack, critical chance, and critical damage.
  • Third Priority: Focus on survival by improving defense and damage reduction for better error tolerance.

Detailed Build

I’m currently level 98, but I’ll show the build based on an assumed level 86, which most players will likely be when facing Erlang. I’ll also use items and gear that are accessible at this stage.

  • The foundation page looks just like it does on the screen. If you don’t have enough points for Survival on the right side, the priority order should be: Attack, Critical Chance, Critical Damage, then Defense.

  • Staff Stances: Max out the first two columns.

  • Mysticism and Strand: Don’t allocate any points.
  • Alteration: Use Cloud Step and max everything except the last upgrade. This skill is crucial because it allows you to perform three charged attacks easily, and it helps you dodge Erlang’s powerful attacks. The last upgrade increases mana cost by 10, which I skip to allow more uses during the boss fight. If you have enough mana for 6-7 uses, then upgrading it for more damage is ideal.

  • Transformation: Max out Evergreen first, then Steadfast for additional defense (each level provides 15 defense, whereas Survival gives only 10).

Recommended Weapons

  • Jingubang is strongly recommended. If you don’t have it, use the Bishui Beast Staff. Jingubang provides 135 attack, while Bishui Beast only gives 105, resulting in nearly a 30% difference. For a boss with a shield mechanic, using Jingubang significantly reduces the difficulty of the fight.

Spirits

Spirits are flexible, but I use Wandering Wight, AKA Bighead. because I got it early and maxed it out. It provides direct damage, which works even if Erlang’s shield is up. If the phase change is close, Bighead can forcefully push Erlang into the next phase without needing to break the shield. There is also the same functionality with the three-stage charged attack, which I will demonstrate in the upcoming battle section.

Recommended Gear

I suggest using the Golden Set for faster Qi collection, reducing the CD of Plaintain Fan. If you already have Jingubang, consider using The Great Sage’s Set for better set bonuses, including increased attack and CD reduction. For this demonstration, I used the weaker Golden Set.

Relics

Eyes: keen insight

Ears: whistling wind

Nose: Hold Breath

Tongue: Tongue of A Connoisseur

Body: Everlasting Vitality

Curios

I use Cat’s Eye Beads, Gold Spikeplate, and Tridacna Pendant, for attack, defense, and CD reduction respectively.

Drinks

I use Supreme Gourd, because I maxed this out, and I rely heavily on its uses.

Drink: I recommend Sunset of the Nine Skies. While it doesn’t heal the most, drinking it 3-4 times resets skill CDs, which is crucial in the Erlang fight. If your skills are on CD and you need them immediately, just take a sip.

Soaks: These are flexible, but Iron Pellet is a must. It prevents interruptions while drinking and reduces damage by 30%, allowing you to drink near Erlang without dodging or worrying about taking damage. Breath of Fire is also essential for stealth-charged attacks in my build. Laurel Buds provides 10% permanent damage reduction, which is more valuable than defense stats.
